ARTIST BIO: Juliana Coles is a mixed media artist working in the high desert of Albuquerque, NM. Juliana developed “Visual Journaling” in 1992 for the Epilepsy Society as an active meditation technique that is now used by therapists, teachers, and professionals around the world. Her Visual Journals have been featured in over 30 publications and as part of the “1000 Journals Project" her work was exhibited at the SFMOMA. Coles presents workshops nationally as well as in Mexico, Greece, Egypt, Austria, and Portugal where the artist walked and sketched the Caminho Portugues. Juliana is a Clark Hulings Foundation Fellow and residencies include Green Olive Arts in Morocco and Otis’ inaugural Residency program in Los Angeles. Coles received the NM Purchase award, a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation, and the City of Albuquerque’s Urban Enhancement Trust Fund for 2022 and 2024. Coles self-published “Ghost Pirate; the Legend of Juana La Loca,” illuminating grief and loss, and her work has been licensed by Warner Brothers for the “Roswell” and “Longmire” series. With a 2026 Artist Residency in Ireland, the artist will further her research into the overlooked history of Women Pirates by exploring the life of legendary Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley.
