"Facing the Within" Zoom Add-ons + full course description

$40.00

Facing the Within; Inner Self Portraits w/ Juliana Coles

(Full workshop is $95.00 - you can’t just purchase the zoom add ons- they are an optional extra for the course as support for the course, but are not the course itself. You can do the course without the zoom add- ons, but it will be more fun to work live with me! Unfortunately, this website platform, Squarespace, doesn’t give me the option of having different pricing options for the online course, so that’s why I had to set up it this way and you have to purchase the zoom and the main workshop as two separate items. I apologize, I know this is confusing. Click here to purchase full course.)

Start the new year off right!  A new you, a new form of expression that connects you to your authentic self. In this online course that is a hybrid of prerecorded and live zoom sessions, discover self-portraiture as a tool to express your personal artistic language. By learning to tell a story, we give life to our imagery. Through the unique mixed media layering processes designed by Juliana Coles, combine journal writing assignments with art making exercises to experience the inner you unbound by convention, society and outer masks. If you’ve never taken a live workshop with me, I look forward to working with you and sharing my unique process of visual journaling.

While technique can be learned from anyone, this course guides you in expressing your personal story through unique signs and symbols. Inner Self Portraits encourage authentic artistry, helping you share your experience through words and images. Your work will reflect your journey, not follow a template. You'll learn to ignore self-criticism and uncover the meaningful parts of your story.

Don't be intimidated by creating a perfect self-portrait—the goal of this assignment is authentic expression, not technical skill. By tracing a reference photo, you'll save time and emphasize creativity over detail. This straightforward approach allows you to be experimental and focus on genuine artistic expression through the use of an image transfer method.

Discover a cache of endless imagery and story within; allow yourself to come alive on the page with Juliana’s safe and encouraging guidance to draw upon and express inner wisdom. No writing or art experience necessary.

If you signed up for “Let’s Face it” with Kara Bullock’s online art school 2024, then you already have this course. However, one of the benefits of this version is that the exercises are now also live so you can work along with me, rather than just watch the video and think you’ll get to the assignment sometime later.

Through extensive video and pdf files, I’ll be demonstrating this process of mixed media layering by working in a sketchbook, journal or altered book format, though this project can be done on any surface, any size. Examples of possible substrates will be provided in class. This is an assignment that can be repeated over and over, always inspiring new ideas, new imagery and new stories. It is endless what we can come up with!

Getting started: Course includes explanatory pdf files, supply lists and prerecorded videos that present in detail Juliana’s favorite supplies, how to choose a book for this process, and how to create your reference photo. Don’t wait until the last minute! Gather your supplies & reference photo, find your book and have it already for our first live zoom session on Saturday, February 7!

You can register at any time. Preliminary video such as ‘gathering supplies’ and ‘choosing a book’ can be accessed as soon as you register. The course is available eternally. If you would like to add the two zoom sessions – register here. All the mixed media layering steps are included in the prerecorded video - but if you are like me, I‘m not that self-motivated and it’s easier to follow along live!

1st Zoom session: Saturday, February 7, 10:00 - 12:30 Mountain Time (MST) If you must miss a live session, video recording will be available! After you have collected your supplies and chosen your book, we will get together in a live Zoom session with Juliana to go through each step of the mixed media layering assignment that essentially develops our background. We’ll begin the process of adding the reference photo through a simple transference technique, with plenty of time for Q and A. All mixed media layering background steps are also available in prerecorded videos. The steps are fairly simple and quick, so you could even begin a new 2 - page spread (and another and another!). After you’ve had time to work through “reconciliation” on your own, we meet again in two weeks for our final zoom session.

Reconciliation: the final step or stage, which everyone will do on their own, is an in-depth process which requires plenty of private time. For this stage Juliana presents extensive video in the full course of her own Reconciliation journey so you can witness the process, which will be different for everyone.

2nd Zoom Session: Saturday, February 21, 10:00 – 12:30 Mountain Time (MST). You have two weeks to complete your “Facing the Within” assignment up through the Reconciliation stage (you’ll learn about Reconciliation in class). For our final zoom session, we meet live to share our pages, talk about what worked, what didn’t, what was hard, what was easy, and Juliana will choose a few participants to discuss their pages in depth to help clarify this process of visual journaling that is a little different for everyone. In this live session we have an ‘unsent letter’ journal writing assignment to help clarify our pages and develop our own insights, so you will need a separate notebook, paper or writing journal. Paper or stationery is nice because then I can put it in a pocket in my book, so everything stays together! This session is where you will learn the most - from each other. So let’s grab a cup of tea, get together, share the assignment and you’ll get valuable feedback from me. Reconciliation is possibly the longest and most difficult phase of Visual Journaling, and we are going to dive deep into this process.

Course (extensive video and pdf files) $95.00

Once you register you have immediate access to the course.

You must first purchase the full course. You cannot add the zoom sessions without the main course. In other words, you can’t JUST purchase the add-ons. But you CAN do the full course without the live zoom sessions - everything you need is there, but the Zoom add-ons will be more fun!

Zoom add-on’s: 2 live 2.5-hour sessions $40.00 (you can add on at any time prior to Feb. 7) When you register for the zoom add-ons, you will receive an email with the link to access zoom sessions.
