‍“Her Way” Mixed media drawing on Vintage Folder image size 11.75” X 7.75,” framed size is 17.5” × 14” ‍ ‍ Professionally framed in light poplar ‘floated’ so you can see the curved edges of the folder 2017

This framed figure drawing, which I love, has been hanging in my hallway for years, but I’m ready to let her go to her forever home.

The “Folder Figures” are an ongoing series of mixed media figurative drawings on vintage file folders begun in 2016. In the mid 90’s an image archive was donated to me by the Albuquerque Public School System when the Librarian who created the archive retired. As their files went digital, the image archive was garbage. This material sat in my garage until a decade ago when I decided to finally go through it. Most of the images were plastic coated and of little use to me in my work, but the folders that contained the images caught my attention. Many of the larger folders were handmade by the Librarian who folded large pieces of manilla paper, stapled pink plastic to the edges and inserted typewritten contents such as “Korean War.”

I tore each folder in half at the fold to draw on. As part of my art practice, I go to weekly figure drawing groups. In figure drawing, I am fast, furious and heavy handed as I carve my line out of space. Each week I draw, go back to the studio, paint over, collage over and write over the parts that don’t seem to be working. I go back to figure drawing and redraw, then cut, paste, paint, and draw and draw and draw until I get something that speaks to me. I never throw anything out. I work and rework until I discover a story evolving. In this piece you can see the layering of the figures combined with collaged graph paper, hand lettering, and stenciling. The folder figures are a limited-edition series of drawings; I only have a certain amount of them and when they are done, that’s it.

In this piece I couldn’t quite get her head right, so I took it off in a fury or mark making and liked the affect. This one was drawn on one of the rarer small folders in which I only had a few.

Some of the larger drawings are too large to ship, but this one is small enough there is no danger in it cracking or breaking.
