Mixed Media Figurative Drawing on Vintage Manila Folder
14.75" x 9.5," unframed
2023
We rarely have male models at my figure drawing group. I’m not sure when I actually drew this figure in archival Pitt Pen, probably a ten-minute pose, but it was years later that I took it out of my flat file of drawings to finish it. There was something about him that ached to be a pirate, so I added his sash, pirate pants, the maps, compass rose and stabbed heart. This is one of my favorite mixed media drawings. I haven’t posted it, because I didn’t want to let him go, but I am finally ready for him to find his forever home. You can see the original tab made by the librarian on the right side of the piece, “Latin America.”
An Albuquerque Public School System image archive from the 1950’s-60’s was donated to me. I was most interested in the vintage folders themselves. I tore each one in half at the fold to draw on. As part of my art practice, I go to weekly figure drawing groups. In figure drawing, I am fast, furious and heavy handed as I carve my line out of space. Each week I draw, go back to the studio, paint over, collage over and write over the parts that don’t seem to be working. I go back to figure drawing and redraw, then cut, paste, paint, and draw and draw and draw until I get something that speaks to me. I never throw anything out. I work and rework until I discover a story evolving. In this piece you can see the layering of the figures combined with collaged graph paper, hand lettering, and stenciling. The folder figures are a limited-edition series of drawings; I only have a certain amount of them and when they are done, that’s it.
$425.00 includes shipping. Drawing comes on mat board and contained in a plastic sleeve for protection.
