The Seawitch Retreat Handbook

I’ve been selling my workshop workbooks since about 2011, but I never sell my retreat handbooks. They are special, and reserved only for the participants. But for a limited time, as a fundraiser for my Pirate Queens Art Residency to Ireland for a month, I am selling the Seawitch Retreat handbook as a fundraiser for the journey! This is NOT the handbook we will be using in Ireland - that one is epic! This is a women of the sea combined with a Grimoire type theme and provides two full days’ worth - over 68 pages outlining 8 complex exercises - of multilayered in-depth Seawitch Visual Journaling assignments that combine some form of journal writing with art making in a book!

I love developing my workshops and putting together the assignments. It is time consuming, rich, rewarding. Planning the retreat, making the workbooks, outlining all of our assignments so that they pull together a lifetime of experience and knowledge, is a labor of love and a core part of my creative expression. I’m always thinking of assignments - different ways of telling our stories through art and writing - my brain just works that way. It is an exciting process that keeps me curious and delighted.

My two favorite themes and workshops to teach are Pirate Queens and the Grimoire or Book of Shadows. This handbook is exceptional because it fluidly combines both themes to become the Seawitch! My pirate alter ego is Captain Morgan La Fey. If you are familiar with the legend of King Arthur, Morgan le Fay is half-sister to Arthur, and of the fairy folk or Druid ancient order, she was trained by Merlin. I am the immortal Pirate Witch. Fay means fairy, but as a child, they didn’t know I was epileptic and thought I was touched by God. My Aunt called me fey, or otherworldly. So I changed the spelling of my pirate name to Fey. Taking on an alter ego helps us embody the theme of our work. Themes help lighten the Visual journaling journey, which is deep and intense, and give focus to the work we embark upon. Most of the information in this workbook was conceived specifically for this retreat and contains many all-new assignments.

‍I presented the Seawitch workshop at my studio as a birthday celebration two years ago: “Attention rogues, witches, sorceresses, pirates and all manner of seafaring ne’er do wells; I am casting my circle to celebrate another year sailing the seven seas, and your presence is requested!”

‍”Join Juliana Coles, AKA the dark Seawitch Morgan La Fey of the Southwest order, for an epic 2-day Visual Journaling retreat that combines my favorite themes for a magical weekend of creative self-enchantment, rogue journaling and all around up to no goodness! Join me if you dare to create your very own Book of the Sea!! This retreat focuses on the secret art of Visual Journaling, a form of expression I created that integrates a variety of journal writing techniques with raw and authentic artmaking in a book. The exercises for this two-day experience revolve around the brave voices of alter egos embodying the pirate and the witch archetypes. You’ll need is your book, some glue sticks, your favorite materials, perhaps Dragon Blood ink, and the willingness to go deep and explore your inner world through an alter ego who has much to teach you about your journey.”

The workbooks are essentially my scripts and include every detail of every assignment all written out exactly as I say it in class, so it’s just like being there! The retreat handbook contains extensive research about women of the sea, sea witches, wind brokers and sea goddesses, introduces my philosophy of what a visual journal is, how to choose a book of the sea, Jule’s Journal Unrules, mixed media warm-ups and book preparing methods, and plenty of homework to keep you busy for the next year!

Created as a handout for my coven (participants), these workbooks are lovingly designed with extreme attention to detail. I have been making workbooks for my all of my classes since 2004, thanks to the urging of fellow art journaling instructor, Kelly Kilmer. As my signature item these workbooks are collectible!

The Seawitch Retreat Workbook has hand cut and hand painted leather covers with black and white pages on parchment paper to give it an old world, lost at sea feel. I’m not a graphic designer and I build these workbooks in the equally ancient Microsoft Publisher, but they are pretty cool, with fun graphics and journal pages sprinkled throughout. The workbook is spiral bound with a ribbon closure. Stock is limited because I put these together by hand and cutting and painting the covers is very time consuming! They are each one of kind!

I hope you’ll support me in my Pirate Queen’s Voyage by untying the third knot and brokering yer own Visual Journaling Journey!
