This workshop will be held at my North Valley Studio where we will have fun putting together magical books from vintage book covers, paper scraps and remnants, and hand painted papers!
Moon Shadows description
I created this book for a friend's birthday, and now you can make your own. The Moon Shadows Journal is a mini grimoire or book of shadows with magical imagery, but you can personalize it however you like. It's intentionally unfinished – a creative project to work on for yourself or someone special. You’ll have a magical foundation to build upon (see video).
In the morning, we'll create collage materials with mixed media techniques like mark making, painting, and stenciling. We'll also learn folding methods to make pockets. Using found book covers, we'll fold papers into signatures and stitch them into vintage covers, cardboard, or anything else we find, then add collage and ribbons.
Supplies: start collecting vintage books /book covers. The Main Library has a book sale every month - perfect to find old books!
Collage materials- scraps of papers with magic, astrological imagery, witchy (or no witchy if that’s not your thing!!), black cats, moons, stars etc. - really anything that catches your eye - I’ll have plenty for you to experiment with. Don’t worry about size as we’ll be cutting things down to make them fit into our covers! Gather different textures, some see through, like vellum. And you may already have some fun pockets. Also attachments such as brads, clips, ribbon, sewing, beads- again I’ll have plenty to experiment with! You’ll also need pretty fabric for the side binding. And small tags or secret notes to add to pockets.
Book binding materials; awl or hole punch, needles and book binding thread. The book binding thread is fairly thick, so you will need thicker needles like doll making needles and a bone folder (I just use a credit card). I only have black and brown book binding thread so if you want a different color you’ll need to bring your own!
-Cork backed ruler at least 12 inches (I have a few extra).And if you have a small self-healing cutting board and an Exacto or mat knife cutting tool, bring them. I have a few extras. And Glue sticks. And anything else you think you need- favorite rubber stamps and stamp pads, rubber stamp letters, paint pens…
$120.00 includes most mixed media supplies. But feel free to bring your favorites.
You can go out for lunch or bring your lunch and it here! Make sure you have drinking water and snacks!
